You SHOULD NOT be looking at our list of best portable travel coffee and espresso makers if you plan to visit the following countries:
Italy, Austria, France, Vietnam, Argentina, Colombia, Turkey, Morocco, Australia and USA (mostly coastal metropolitan cities like Seattle, Portland, New York City etc.).
Because all these places have amazing coffee culture and it would be a crime for you to travel all the way there and not sit down at a café overlooking a river or a busy street while sipping the local brew.
If you are going to a place without great coffee or are really married to the idea of saving money, please do keep reading!
As a New Yorker, I often neglect my fancy Breville Barista Espresso Machine during the week and just use my good ole french press in the mornings because it is fast, efficient, and depending on the type of beans I use, damn good.
So, even if you’re just a simple commuter and have no grand travel escapades planned for the near future, this article will still be able to provide you with some value.Still with me?
Okay, let’s review some top of the line travel coffee and espresso makers.
1. AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker – My Favorrite Pick
If you don’t have time to read this entire article (it is pretty long), at least read my review on the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker. I’ve had the pleasure of owning one for several years now and in my opinion, all coffee lovers should own one. If you do already own one, they make perfect gifts and everyone I’ve given it to have come to love it.
Why? Simply because it is light, portable, inexpensive, versatile and extremely easy to use regardless whether you’re making coffee in the comfort of your home or up in the mountains breathing the fresh crisp morning air. Oh, and of course, most importantly, it makes a consistently great cup of coffee.
There are a lot of variables when it comes to making damn good coffee–quality of the coffee beans, roast, purity and water temperature. What separates the Aeropress from most coffee making devices is that it gives the coffee maker so much more CONTROL over the brewing process. I’ve made some of the best coffee with this device within 2 to 3 minutes. I’ve taken my Aeropress on business trips, backpacking trips, camping and even on a cruise once and it always beats out any coffee you get from a hotel, gas station, restaurant or airplane.
The entire device is really made up of just two main components: the plunger and the reservoir. When you purchase the Aeropress it will come with additional tools like a stirrer, funnel and a scoop, but these are optional and you don’t need to take them with you on your travels.
TIP: Don’t forget to save money by reusing the paperfilters (up to 4 times if you’re gentle). I realized this after a year of just using them only once and throwing them out. Not only do you save some of your hard earned cash, but you’re cutting down on waste as well. Also, there is no change in taste or consistency of the coffee. A win-win situation!
Lastly, after you’re done making your coffee, cleaning the AeroPress is a breeze. All I do with mine is that I rinse it with some hot water and leave it out to dry on my dish rack.
What is an AeroPress coffee maker and how is it different from a French Press?
An Aeropress is a coffee maker that is micro-filtered meaning that the coffee is free of particles and as a result can be stored and be used to also make espressos and lattes. Unlike a French Press which needs to be used with coarse ground coffee, an Aeropress has no such requirements, allowing it to extract more flavor from the coffee and be prepared faster because it does not necessitate a longer steep time.
One of the great things I love about my AeroPress over my French Press is the fact that I have choices on how to make the coffee and I can tailor the end result to what I’m craving that particular day. Below are two methods to using the AeroPress. The differences are minor but it is good to know both if you intend on purchasing one.
The only similarities that exist between an Aeropress and a French Press is that they both utilize pressure and immersion to make coffee. Beyond that, they are two very different tools. In conclusion, an Aeropress is a much more versatile and efficient tool compared to a French Press.
Standard Aeropress Method
For the standard method, the water starts to drip almost immediately as it goes through the filter of ground coffee.
Inverted Aeropress Method
For the inverted method, the water is fully submerged with the coffee grounds until you flip it over (invert it) and start extracting the coffee.
Which method do I prefer personally?
My coffee taste palate is not as sophisticated as a barista from Seattle, but I’ve personally gotten more use to the inverted method, which I find easier to implement in the morning. Additionally, I like that I have more control over the steep times and the fact that the taste is more evenly distributed due to all the water being exposed to the same ratio of coffee grounds.
Easy to use
You have the option of making coffee, espresso and latte
Utilize the standard method or the inverted method
Easy to clean
I’ve owned a few of these over the last 5 years, so don’t expect them to last forever, especially if you’re using one everyday
